When people ask me, “Why do you sing?” I always,
respond, “Because I have to!”

Meet Sue Matsuki
Hi, I’m Sue Matsuki. Welcome to my website! Right here is where you can find out all about me as a singer/performer; producer, teacher and writer.

No, I am not Japanese. I come to my name through my Japanese husband. I took his name when we married because it was a "trade up" name. You see, my maiden name was Trosell, which made me "Suetrosell" which, to me, always sounded like an antacid. I am actually of Swedish and French descent which means nothing really except that I’m a big chested, great kisser!

I grew up in Waterbury, CT, the town that used to have a huge, illuminated cross on the hill off of Route 84! Yep, that would be Waterbury’s claim to fame, well, that and ME of course (she says ever so modestly)! I have 7 brothers, no sisters, so I was the "featured" child which, I’m sure, is what led me to becoming a performer. (Having 7 brothers also made me the oldest living virgin on earth but that’s another story!) The first time I was on stage was at age 6. I was supposed to sing "The Boy I Love" but, to my mother's horror, I innocently belted out Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Love For Sale" [my babysitter exposed me to Ella at a very early age]...I was crowned Little Miss Hamilton Park and my mother was taken into custody by child services. (Just Kidding!) Since there has never been another Little Miss Hamilton Park Contest, I am actually still the reigning Little Miss Hamilton Park!

I did a lot of community theatre and dance recitals growing up and produced many a talent show in my two car garage! In 1976, I reigned as Miss Waterbury (I liked crowns!), but I only reigned for 2 months, fulfilling my obligation as 1st Runner Up. I also won Miss Congeniality and got the Talent Award for dancing the death scene from Swan Lake. I then heard the call only the highly flammable, polyester clad could hear, "HOOT HOOT" and became part of a Salsa/Hustle dance partnership called Sue & Lou. So, surprising to many, I actually started out as “a dancer who sang”. In New York, I have appeared in productions of Oklahoma, Bye, Bye Birdie, A Christmas Carol, Out of the Frying Pan, Agnes of God, West Side Story and They’re Playing Our Song. I also choreographed most of the above along with Guys n’ Dolls and with the exception of Agnes of God because well, nuns don’t dance...at least they didn’t until Nunsense hit town!

After I moved to New York, I started singing jazz at The Village Gate (now sadly a drugstore) but my first “professional” Cabaret show was at Don’t Tell Mama more than 25 years ago. Since then I received 10 MAC Award Nominations and I am a 3 time MAC Award Winner (in 6 different categories) as follows: 2002 MAC Award WINNER for Female Jazz/Pop/R&B Vocalist; 2002 MAC Award Nominee for Best Female Recording for my first Jazz CD, A New Take; 2004 MAC Award Nominee for Duo/Group with my partner Marcus Simeone; 2006 MAC Award WINNER for Special Productions for my sold out 7 week run of 10 Years in the Making with Musical Director Gregory Toroian (a new show every week for 7 weeks); 2007 MAC Award Nominee for Female Vocalist; 2008 MAC Award Nominee for Duo/Group with my partner Edd Clark; 2008 MAC Award WINNER for Specialty Song (“One Stop Shopping” by Page/Matsuki/ Toroian); 2010 MAC Award Nominee for Female Vocalist; a 2011 MAC Award Nominee for Duo/Group with partner Edd Clark and again, a 2012 MAC Award Nominee for Duo/Group with partner Edd Clark. (We are the Susan Lucci of this category!) My most cherished "award" comes from being selected by Julie Wilson herself as the very first 2004 Julie Wilson Award Recipient given by the Mabel Mercer Foundation. In 2009 I was also awarded The Jeff Matson Award which is given to a "Jack of all Trades" and to a person who is noted for serving the Cabaret Community.

I am a 25-year veteran Cabaret/Jazz singer and comedian and have played some legendary Jazz Clubs: The Village Gate, Birdland, The Iridium, Sweet Rhythm; and Cabarets: Feinstein's at the Regency, The Metropolitan Room, The Laurie Beechman, Town Hall, Arci’s Place, Don’t Tell Mama, 88’s, Judy’s, Danny’s, Jan Wallman’s, The Duplex, The Triad, Caroline’s Comedy Club, Helen’s Hideaway Room and Broadway Baby in New York; The Cosmopolitan Room and Odette’s in New Hope, PA; The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska; The Gardenia Room in Los Angeles; The Standing Room Only Cabaret in Hartford, CT; The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center, Voices for Charity, Trumpets & Le Dome at The Manor in NJ; The Rockland Cultural Arts Center & Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway Series in Nyack & Town Hall in Terrytown, NY; the CabaretFest in Provincetown, MA; Boothsbay Harbor Opera House in Maine and The Four Seasons in Las Vegas, NV. I was named a “Best of Connecticut” by The Connecticut Magazine and, as such, did a benefit for the March of Dimes sponsored by the magazine at the Foxwood’s Casino.

I have 3 CDs currently for sale. A New Take, Sue & Edd’s FABULOUS Christmas, with Edd Clark and Christine Lavin present Christmas Angel featuring my original song with Paul Stephen, "Christmas Angel". All CDs  may be purchased at: www.cdbaby.com or www.amazon.com or downloaded on iTunes©.

As an actor I was a Super and Diva Double at the Metropolitan Opera where I was featured in Moses und Aaron (as a voiceless Voice of God); Tristan und Isolde (Braganea double); I was seen on the PBS broadcast of Tristan und Isolde (I was the chick screaming in the tower in Act II); Norma (Druid Princess) - no crown &$#@!  We called this production Snore-ma!; and Il Travatore (Court Lady & Leonora double).  I was then invited to sing with the Met chorus in a special presentation of After the Ball by Noel Coward starring the late, great Irene Worth.

I am also a producer, writer, reviewer, host, comedian, award-winning songwriter and a Cabaret teacher in NY, at The Theater Barn in Ridgefield, CT and at UCONN in Waterbury, CT for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. I have served on the MAC Board of Directors as the Treasurer.
